head’s up that today’s More to the Story was not posted here. It’s a celebration of 200 days of daily posting AND hitting 900k.
It’s also a goodbye to daily posting. I will 100% still be answering prompts and porting them over to AO3, but I have finally killed off whatever buffer I had left and instead of frantically trying to build it back up, this felt like a natural place to concede that daily is impossible to sustain.
State of the Leda Verse
-Last chapter which is basically an epilogue of Hymn will come out before the end of today.
-Next story is Alma POV
-Return to the aus of the aus, several things left I want to write for Wake Myself and I know about popular, (annnnnd maybe a new AU or two…or three)
-prompt-wise I actually am part o the way into one already, so just more reassurance that they will continue!
Non Leda verse
-Also started writing the second half of the second pour story
-once that’s done, I will start answering pour verse prompts as well
-i was accepted into the next Duck Print Press anthology which is Three Musketeers themed (this happened a few months back, but I forgot to post about it!) and have a fun modern AU Porthos/Aramis story half-written.
I feel like, if someone felt like puzzling it out, the two interesting routes to take would be “did a jew make this food, if they made this machine/loaded this machine/ordered the machine to make food?” (That last one is particularly promising/tangled because of the rules regarding gentiles preparing food with Jewish supervision: does it count as observing because it’s not like you have the ability Stop the machine if it does something wrong.)
The question of “is the requirement for kosher slaughter removed if the meat was never alive?” gets fancy. Maybe if the meat that they scanned to produce the Meat Data from was kosher slaughtered, that would suffice? This is, I feel, an argument going on in the background of every star trek show.
But to know that we kinda have to know where a replicator is getting its data? Is it doing synthesis or reduplication of scanned foods? Does your kosher brisket contain components of a non-kosher cut that contained other qualities you asked for (like marbling or age?)
I think the even deeper question is, knowing how smart starfleet ships are, could one convert to Judaism, and would that solve the replicator problem?
I can only think of one actually sentient Starfleet ship (as opposed to being a space Alexa) in the entirety of Trek canon – the Discovery’s computer is sentient now – and I think that would be the absolute minimum requirement for converting. So possibly that one ship could.
So to discuss whether or not the data has to be kosher, I think it’s necessary to consider the purpose of kashrus. Laws around shekhita are intended to maintain ritual purity, yes, but also to reduce cruelty. I think that since, no matter what, no animal was harmed in the making of your replicated brisket, so long as it’s in the style of a kosher animal, it’s kosher.
A more complicated question I think is whether or not replicated pork or shellfish is actually treif, because you’re not eating from the actual animals, only proteins that are organized like their flesh.
Yeah and maybe it’s actually pareve, like an egg? I’m not sure!
There are arguments that the Impossible Burger isn’t/can’t be vegan as it uses ingredients that were tested on animals. If someone clean-room reverse-engineered the replicator pattern, is it meat in any way that matters?
I talked about that here. It’s not just vibes, there are a lot of factors.
…tangential question.
If you replicated, say, grape juice, would it be grape juice? That is, would it qualify as fruit of the vine if it never grew on a vine?
That’s kind of the whole thing. I don’t know, and a question like that would kind of require a lot of stops along the way.
People keep asking ‘would this be considered this’ and the answer is 'that would really depend on which rabbi you ask, and which rulings were made on the way to having fully-functional replicators, and which steps we hit along the way, and the exact specifics of those replicators.’
random, but I think the way people talk about abusers as hypercompetent, calculating manipulators that Know exactly what they’re doing makes it easier for people to get into abusive relationships
The people who abused me prolly had no idea what the fuck they were doing. It was still bad! I still don’t regret buggin out!! But I don’t think they had a secret wall covered in red string linking notes like “How to fuck up this person specifically”. Pretty sure they were in their own bubble the whole damn time, actually, and yeah, that does make it harder to recognize or get out of
This is one of several reasons it really bothers me to hear about “abusers” in the context of like…a distinct class of people, or an immutable identity. I feel like I see that a lot online, this idea that Abusers are uniquely bad people who can be neatly identified, ostracized, and avoided.
My aunt does not know she’s an abusive mother to my cousin and is rather in deep denial about it. Like deep enough she’s cut me off from her family for trying to start a conversation about it.
My abusive exes did not know they were abusing me in our intimate relationships. Again, one is in very deep denial, another feels fully justified in her shitty treatment of me, and learned these behaviours from her own mother. She’s very likely continuing these behaviours in her own family to this day.
And I had to learn to dismantle the bad habits I learned from them and enacted unintentionally. It took working with therapists to do this and I’m still hyper-aware of crossing the line without meaning to.
Cycles of abuse perpetrate because people aren’t always aware of whether their actions are abusive or not, whether through ignorance, learned behaviours or simple denial or some combination of the above.
And when the language and idea of abuse is wrapped up in this perfect villain easy to recognise rhetoric, it puts makes it easier for people to push the term aside and say “no, that can’t be me, im not like that.” It makes it easy to deny because there’s this preconceived notion. It’s the same as thinking all rapists are bad men in black hiding in bushes to grab women. Or that it’s “only real domestic violence if they’re in hospital” (which i have sadly heard from a real woman’s mouth while on jury duty for a DV trial).
Its not reality and the image actively harms victims and enables perpetrators and stops people from realising what they’re doing, the effects of their behaviours and making meaningful and long term changes.
I am super against light pollution, and have been for decades
but I am also super annoyed by the way it’s framed as “without light pollution you can see how beautiful the night sky is” way more prominently than it’s framed as “hey, did you ever stop to think of how much energy/resources/money are literally wasted by having so much light shine up into the sky?”
so people get the idea that light pollution can only be remedied by eliminating all night-time light, which would make being outside at night very inconvenient, instead of by making night-time light shine only on the ground where, y'know, the people who need it are
The mildest example of what OP’s talking about in Dunedin, Aotearoa:
This is just with the streetlamp equivalent of using lampshades. Imagine what truly directional city lights could achieve?
no offense to people named aaron but who the fuck decided two a’s were necessary??? now i can’t converse with someone named aaron without calling them a-aron
not to be That Bitch but it’s another example of an anglicized disaster of a name from biblical hebrew, which was aharon and imo infinitely more badass than aaron
others in this cursed category: elisheva (elizabeth), yirmiyahu (jeremy), mikha-el (michael), matisyahu (matthew), shoshana (susanna)
you really are that bitch huh i feel educated as fuck right now
